How To Get Rid Of Black Algae
Of all the algaes that can plague a pool, black algae is by far the most troublesome and tenacious. It appears as small dark spots but has long root systems that dig deep into the plaster and tile grout. It also forms a protective layer over its visible parts that prevent chlorine and other sanitizing compounds from having any effect on it at all. This means that black algae can easily form in your pool even if all chemical levels are balanced and equipment is functioning correctly.
Even though what we just described might sound hopeless, there is a way to remove black algae but it takes a lot of work and attention. To get started you will need the following tools and chemicals
- Gloves
- Chlorine Tablets
- Pool Brush
- Algaecide Developed for Killing Black Algae
Once you have these items ready, put on the gloves and begin rubbing all of the visible algae spots with the chlorine tablets. This can be difficult for spots on the bottom of the pool but you can get creative and clip a tablet to the end of a long pole for easier application. After scrubbing each of the spots, use the pool brush to scrub those same areas again. You will see the algae begin to lift from the sides into dark clouds in the water. Repeat these first steps until you can’t see anymore spots.
Next, turn off your pool pump and follow the instructions provided on the back of the algaecide for application amounts. Most algaecides will require that the pool system not be run for at least 24 hours. Once the treatment is complete, you will have to regularly test your water and return it to balanced pH and chlorine levels. It is important that you wait at least a full week before allowing swimmers back in the pool so that the algaecide and all free floating algae particles have an opportunity to be fully filtered out of the water.
If you find that the problem persists even after these steps, it is always a good idea to ask a pool maintenance professional to see and further diagnose your issues.
