Algae Eradication 101
If you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position where persistent algae is plaguing your pool, fear not, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. While persistent algae can wreck havoc on your state of mind and make for a completely unwelcoming pool, there are tried and true treatment plans that can get your water back to normal on the double. Depending on the severity of the issue, here are a few possible steps you might have to consider when battling stubborn algae:
Total Sanitation
This means getting rid of everything that has come into contact with the algae saturated water, even possibly the water itself. Start by thoroughly cleaning the filter and replacing the filter media. This means tossing out the existing grids or cartridges and starting fresh. Brushes, floats, and pool toys should also be replaced. If the algae is deeply ingrained into your pool surfaces, it can even become necessary to drain the pool completely and thoroughly clean the surfaces with an acid wash.
Total Destruction
This sounds a little intense but it is exactly what you will need to do to prevent the algae from coming back after you have sanitized everything. Even if you end of draining, scrubbing, and refilling your pool there is the opportunity for some algaes to have dug in deep and survive the initial onslaught. This step requires a strong shock treatment and can be augmented with chlorine accelerators specifically formulated to treat against algae blooms. Remember to follow dosage directions closely when super shocking your water and keep a high quality home testing kit on hand to make sure you know when the water is once again safe to swim in.
Total Prevention
After these first two extensive steps, some ongoing prevention measures beyond regular chlorination and cleaning might be necessary. Algaecides or phosphate removers can be added to your pool water to inhibit algae growth and consume organic material that can feed algae and lead to additional blooms.
