Hot Tub History

While spending an evening soaking in a hot tub, relaxing and unwinding after a long work week, have you ever stopped to consider where the tradition came from? Over the years, hot tubs have undergone a fair amount of development and evolution. In looking at a brief history of hot tubs, here’s what we found out.

The first hot tub in the western world is accredited to Roy Jacuzzi (sound familiar). This California man was the first individual to commercially market a precursor to the hot tub, via a self-contained bath system. Jacuzzis, named after the inventor, hit the market in the 1970s and were rumored to have been modeled after ancient Roman’s baths.

This first whirlpool hot tubs used an aeration pump to produce the swirly mix of water we are familiar with today. Since the first basic models, hot tubs have evolved into a rich and diverse market available in a range of shapes, sizes, and accessories like therapeutic jets, swim spas, and so on.

If you are considering purchasing your first hot tub, or are ready to upgrade to a higher performing unit, here are a few questions to ask:

  • How much money do I want to spend?
  • How much maintenance is going to be needed to protect and care for my investment?
