Winter Landscaping Around Your Pool
There’s a reason why so many individuals spend their winters in Arizona: it’s beautiful. While our summers are harsh, the winters are a whole other story. At Blue Water Pool Chemical Company, it’s one of our favorite times of the year.
To take advantage of the mild season, we love to give a bit of attention to our backyard environment. It’s the perfect time to plan ahead for a truly glorious spring and not too chilly to get outside and do some of the work yourself. Here are five landscaping tips for sprucing up your poolside areas:
Lawn Care Now
In our desert region, we are lucky to be able to grow many different types of grass throughout the winter months. In fact, a lush yard is possible year-round. Dormant bermuda grass is your best bet for a green winter yard. Since it’s dormant through the spring, you’ll need to encourage its activity with a monthly application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer in addition to plenty of watering. This type of winter grass needs deep root penetration to ensure proper growth.
Sowing Plants
Mid-winter, around the new year is the perfect time to get your summer bulbs in the ground and to get a jump on weed prevention. Several examples of our favorite winter-sown plants include that of the bright African Daisies and Carnations. Another lovely ground cover includes Globe Amaranth. While other parts of the country must wait for the ground to thaw, the Arizona winter is a key time to fertilize and prepare your poolside space for a great growing season.
Tree Pruning
Winter is also the perfect time to prune any deciduous trees. With the leaves gone, it’s easier to trim limbs and get rid of overgrowth so that the trees can have a healthy spring and summer.
Basic Care
Last, but not least, pay attention to the overall aesthetics of your yard. Now is when you want to deliver a bit of attention and care by removing broken or unwieldy tree limbs, cutting back foliage or overgrowth and cleaning up grass and plant beds.
